Many cases have come to us, where because of some errors and sometimes welfare fraud, that the workers of the family services department of the Province of Manitoba are unconcerned about shelter, food and medical for the children that fall victim to the errors of the parents. Does it pay to be honest? Since 1990 we’ve been writing and calling the departments of Social Services to make amendments in a proposal to these problems, where both the Province and the children would be secured, not to fall into these traps that are embodied into the system of Social Services. We have proof; where for instance, a woman ended up in Selkirk, Manitoba’s mental institution because of the excessive abuse put onto these women by threats from spouses or common-law partners, where the government is uncaring as to how the woman must go through these atrocities to satisfy the government’s request. In that particular case, I was involved with Family Services in a case where a supervisor (by the name of Maria Thiessen) agreed to wipe out an over-payment because of the psychiatrist getting involved into resolving that dispute. It ended up that the father, because of our work at the Mission of the Shroud, admitted to be the father of the other child; where the monthly maintenance, again because of our work, was doubled, where the woman in question has come out of psychiatry, is functioning well and there are many cases like this. In the last few days, the Mission of the Shroud bought groceries for two families that were thrown out on the street by the system, where the children are victims. The errors committed by the department of Social Services (without going to court) have forced woman to sign a guilty plea in exchange for food and shelter, where they are forced to surrender a portion of their income, which is below poverty, to pay back overpayments. Strangely, this very Government is now employing some people that were victims of their scheme; where they are bonded without criminal records and functioning in society because of our work that has cost nothing to the Government. And we are not sponsored nor assisted in any form and we manage to have 100% success rate. If we were to tell the department of Social Services the names of those victims that we bought food for, they would calculate it as an income and remove it from their social assistance cheque while we paid for the food - where they (Government of Manitoba) have put at risk the lives of children and families that very often, leads to criminality in order to survive. After many attempts to reach these Government agencies to know avail, they brag in the paper as to be the “big guns” of Manitoba; where not long ago, they were in the scandals of the Crocus Funds. And this is the type of Government we have: either incompetence or fraudulent people. Either way, they are unacceptable and we will push until the system is clean, coast to coast and north to south. We invite the Ministers in question to an open conference on the subject. If they have any conscience and expect us to vote for them, perhaps if it were their kids they would find ways to cover it up but these are Native people. Of course, we understand. Even the Media has never been honest enough from the Free Press to the Winnipeg Sun and all Medias in Canada have omitted to print these articles to cover their friends in Government that may grant them favours some day. We are not in politics. What we do is a vocation to get rid of this trash that is now digging in your pocket and tell you they’ll send you a cheque (of the money they stole from you).
