Greetings. “Why,” (you may ask) “…should we honour them?” Thanksgiving. A lot of people don’t know that Thanksgiving comes from the Indian people. When the American soldiers returned from war they expected 7,000 soldiers but instead, they had to add a ‘0’ because it was 70,000. Imagine the panic for food by the soldiers! They were going to starve to death. So those savages (as they call them) came out of the bush with all kinds of wild turkey and fed the American soldiers that had pushed them into the bush. And that was the beginning of celebrating life and ‘thanksgiving’, like we have every fall. But do we ever say, “Thanks” to the Indians on Thanksgiving? No. To this day we ignore their beautiful ‘life-giving’ gift. We have traded ‘life-giving’ for ‘lie-giving’ with Robert Young from ‘Father Knows Best’ as the preferred image of Thanksgiving. You know, we are the ones that are here in Canada as immigrants. The Indian people were already here when we arrived. That’s why we call them First Nations. But our words are not sincere because we do not honour them. Ever since I was a young boy, I always had a deep love for the Native people. And what is a major problem in Canada is that in history when I was in school we were taught to hate these people and anyone who wants to deny this are liars and have no reasons to be in any position to run this nation if they will not admit to this truth. This deep love I have, and will always have for the Native people. I earn no wages - receive no salary. The Native people have always been there for me in time of need. ‘When I was hungry they brought me food’. They brought me fish. They brought me moose. They came in the ’name of love’ and shared what they had. They shared their hearts. There was no ‘price tag’ on what they offered like we try to impose today within the governmental structuresof exploitation of these people. It is not sufficient to pay out land claims and monies for residential schools. Reconciliation must take place and we must unite as a family to help our Native people, our children climb out of despair. Both the church and the government have a responsibility to step forward and heal with the people and put an end to their tyranny permanently. The arrogant silence of people who speak of God and do nothing for evangelization will be amended soon. God is coming to bring his Indian people out of bondage. No longer will the world laugh upon or treat our beautiful First Nations people as inferior. It is a sacred trust to partake in the healing of others. Canada must ask forgiveness of the Native people for having reduced them to ‘lesser’ – for the injury that has been propagated over the generations resulting in the de-generation of Canada’s ‘first’ people. Unity will come through becoming one family – one people. The world will bear witness to Canada asking and receiving forgiveness from its Native people. This beautiful restoration of value through respect and love will change Canada forever. We will no longer be just a nation but acclaimed as the true Family ofCanada. Canada’s reconciliation will become an irresistible blueprint for the rest of the world. The world will marvel at Canada’s joy. The world will want it and do the same. This very day a GREAT CHANGE is coming to the world. Let us enter this new ‘time’ with joyful hearts – a time where God will reveal his love for the world. No person will be unaffected. God doesn’t miss anyone! May you be blessed, Roger Poisson |
